“Dirk…Bragg?” said Marge slowly. Her eyes narrowed as she examined the wild man who was screaming and pounding his fists on the hood of her van.

“Grandma,” began Kate. “Grandma, you’ve got a weird look in your eye. It’s freaking me out.”

“Well then,” said her normally stoic grandmother. She slowly turned to face Kate. “Let’s get freaky.”

“Grandma!”

Marge opened the door and walked three steps toward Dirk.

“Get your grubby fists off my van,” she told him, wagging a finger in his face.

Dirk rounded on her. “Make me, old lady!” he bellowed.

Marge nodded, as if considering his words. Quick as a cat, she swept Dirk’s feet from under him with a perfectly timed kick.

“Grandma!” gasped Kate and Bobby in unison as Dirk hit the ground.

“Old lady, am I?” growled Marge through clenched teeth. She pinned him to the ground with a knee on his chest. “You listen to me, Dirk Bragg.”

Dirk stammered, but Marge plowed on.

“Oh, yes, I know who you are, you no-good, banana-chomping, tabloid-writing, country-song-twanging filth.”

“Who,” sputtered Dirk, still on his back, “who are you?”

Kate jumped down from the van and strode into Dirk’s line of sight. She gave him a little wave.

“Hey.”

Dirk’s eyes bulged. He looked from Kate to Marge and back again.

“Oh,” he said, resigning himself to the situation. “Oh,” he repeated, the fight slowly fading from him. “Kate.”

He closed his eyes, considering his options. His eyes popped back open. He suddenly looked calm, almost friendly. “Can I offer you some tea or something?”

Kate looked at her grandmother, then back at Dirk. “That would be nice,” she said. “Thanks.”
